Creative Industries support Mercury Energy Tactix

Lucy Macilquham and friends

The Hustle

Bazi Baker Trio

Creative Industries students from the MusicArts programme treated the 2500 strong audience at the opening match of the ANZ Netball Championship. The first game of the season between our home team, the Mercury Energy Tactix, and The Pulse at the Westpac Trust Arena last Monday (22 March) was a real buzz - and not just cos we won!

The Bazi Baker Trio ushered VIPs into the stadium ahead of the game with cool mellow tunes before The Hustle fired up and rocked the punters as they arrived for the pre-match hoopla. Then Lucy Macilquham and friends kicked the show off on centre court before returning at half time to rev the crowd up for the coup de grace. Excellent entertainment and great experience for our guys. Well done!

See more of our fantastic talented students from MusicArts perform over the coming weeks along with grads from CircoArts as well.

Worth the price of admission on their own I reckon!

WOW

Wearable art goodness coming your way again for 2010!

Every year these guys produce a knock-out show that is truly stunning. If you've never been to one then shame on you! Of course you can absolve yourself by getting along this year. What you will find is that WOW is far more than a garment show. It's not a quirky fashion or art garment parade: it's a complete immersive visual and aural treat that will take your breath away.

Of course you could go one better and submit an entry! Like I said the other day don't look to me to lead the charge on that: I'm just the guy who thinks you should but I will give you as much profile as I can if you enter and even more if you win. Cos boy is it worth it. While the competition is pretty steep you stand to win some great prize money and a great profile to boot.

So step up, get your entry in and then let me know.

Competitions

This seems to be the season for art & design competitions. Personally I love them. Well the idea of them: I'm not so good at entering myself. I like them because they draw in such a diverse range of people and throw up (if that's a good choice of words) all manner of solutions to design teasers. Sure they're often allied to a commercial or corporate outcome but they open the door to exciting work and often give the designers a foot up or a foot in. Some can turn the resulting profile distinctly to their advantage.

Ignition has been sent info for two more of these competitions: we also received one for the Music Month Tee which was posted earlier this month. (I'm really keen to hear if anyone entered this and see what they submitted:  if you did please send in a link or a photo).

The growing list of competitions includes one for The New Zealand Art Show and another for Sounds Like Us.

The NZ Art Show's objective, or at least the objective of the trust that runs the event, is to foster and promote support for emerging, mid-career and established artists. Which is a pretty broad remit. I don't think that really leaves anyone out ... but if you want to be considered, registrations end fairly soon. You'll need to be in by the 31st March.

Sounds Like Us is a personal favourite of mine. I love the idea and I love the medium. The idea here is to create a design for a radio that captures our NZ culture. The best designs will be brought to life by Weta Workshop and displayed at Te Papa. Entries for this close on 16th April 2010.

Anyway, best of luck if you enter and keep in mind the reality that competitions are really like lotteries: the good man has at least a 1 in 5000 chance of winning.
